College Graduation Gifts

Graduation / Commencement

Graduation or Commencement refers to the receipt of an academic degree and involves a special ceremony, where students become graduates. This marks an important step for all young academics, as they complete their education and begin a new era of their lives.

The ceremony usually includes a procession of the academic staff and candidates, who wear academic dress for this formal occasion.

In North America, it is common to celebrate graduations from school, college and university, whilst in most other countries only degree-conferring graduations are observed.

Gifts that moved people

Melissa, 25 got this from her mother and said:

I had my license at 15 because the state allowed me to drive. I drove a Clunker... the worst one. Then my mother gave me a brand new Neon. I always wanted a Mustang, but told her it was not practical and too expensive for me, and that I would prefer a sporty 4-door. I loved that car, sadly it was totaled in an accident by another person. One day I took my Grandma's car to Mom's office to go to lunch with her, it was summer, and she said... oh we will take my car... as we are walking into the parking garage she says, will you drive? I say.. ummmm ok.. she then hands me "her" keys. They don't look like her keys so I ask what is this, and she says, why don't you push the panic button. I do, and there is a white Mustang sitting in front of me, all mine!

Pillow for my dorm room bed, called a "husband"

Anna, 48 got this from her sister-in-law and said:

As I was getting ready to leave home for the first time to go to college, my sister-in-law came to visit carrying something she called a "husband." It was a pillow with a big back and arms that I could put on my dorm room bed and recline on. I had never heard of nor seen anything like it, but she assured me that it would be very useful. I was skeptical but took it to college with me anyway. I noticed a few other people had one so I put it out on my bed. Wow! I could lay back and still do my homework. It was so comfortable and I used it every day. As a matter of fact, I kept and used that pillow for ten years after college graduation before it finally feel apart. This was a very thoughtful, useful, and long-lasting gift.
