Christening Present

Christening / Baptism

The word "baptism" derives from the Greek baptizo, meaning "immersing", "performing ablutions". It refers to the Christian ritual act, involving the use of water, by which a person is admitted as a full member of the Christian Church, or more specifically, to the particular Church in which the baptism is administered.

The New Testament gives several accounts of baptisms performed in the River Jordan by John the Baptist and various disciples of Jesus. The earliest known written instructions for baptism appear in an anonymous book called The Didache, or Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, which most scholars date to some time in the first half of the 2nd century.

Although not all Christians consider the rite of baptism necessary, most do and the differences lie mostly in the manner of baptising: most baptise infants, other do not; some insist on submersion while others merely pour water on the head.

The most common form of baptism these days is to pour water three times on the forehead, "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". Some Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions baptise their babies by totally immersing them in the font.
